Research Statement

Alexandre Antonelli's indexed work centers on how geological and climatic history shapes the distribution of life, particularly in the Neotropics. His most-cited lead-author contributions argue that Andean uplift and landscape evolution drove Amazonian biodiversity (over 2,400 citations) and trace the impact of Andean uplift on Neotropical plant evolution, while a related synthesis asks why the Neotropics harbor so many plant species. A parallel thread addresses mountain systems directly, examining geological and climatic influences on mountain biodiversity and why mountains matter for biodiversity more broadly. Beyond these, his portfolio includes CoordinateCleaner, a standardized toolkit for cleaning biological occurrence records, and ten golden rules for reforestation that balance carbon sequestration, biodiversity recovery and livelihoods. Earlier middle-author contributions include raxmlGUI 2.0, a graphical interface for phylogenetic analyses, and a Science synthesis on building mountain biodiversity through geological and evolutionary processes. No software, datasets, grants or patents beyond publications are indexed. Across these works, the through-line is a career spent connecting deep-time Earth history to present-day biodiversity patterns and their conservation.
