Alistair James Hobday's indexed work centers on defining and classifying marine heatwaves, a framework introduced in his highly cited hierarchical approach that has become foundational for the field. Related first-author work identifies global marine hotspots as sentinels for climate change adaptation, while his senior-authored research on automated acoustic tracking of aquatic animals established design principles for listening-station arrays. His portfolio also includes ecological risk assessment for the effects of fishing, connecting climate science to practical fisheries management. Beyond these, Hobday contributed as a middle author to consortium studies on biodiversity redistribution under climate change and longer, more frequent marine heatwaves over the past century, both of which extended the reach of his heatwave framework. His senior-authored work on bright spots at the environmental science-policy-practice interface reflects a sustained interest in knowledge exchange, complementing earlier research on seasonal forecasting for fisheries and aquaculture decision support. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond publications. Across these outputs, the through-line is translating climate and oceanographic evidence into operational tools for marine management, often alongside collaborators such as Dan A. Smale.
