Alon Harmelin's indexed work centers on in vivo optical imaging of vascular and hematopoietic dynamics in mouse models, developed largely through senior-author studies at the Weizmann Institute. His most-cited lead work used a lipophilic near-infrared dye for whole-body tracking of hematopoietic cell homing, and he later advanced transcranial optical vascular imaging of cortical hemodynamics, including a simplified non-invasive variant and a robust method for adjusting laser speckle contrast during brain visualization. Related studies applied dynamic light scattering imaging to blood coagulation and combined multimodal imaging to characterize tumor vascular networks. Beyond imaging, Harmelin contributed as a middle author to high-impact microbiome consortia, including work on personalized gut mucosal colonization resistance to probiotics and transkingdom control of microbiota diurnal oscillations, the latter alongside Christoph A. Thaiss. Earlier first-author work addressed concurrent Hepatozoon canis and Toxoplasma gondii infection in a dog, while senior-author studies examined MHC class II down-regulation after Ehrlichia canis infection and a cage-autonomous method for maintaining germ-free barrier status. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications. The arc runs from veterinary infection biology toward optical imaging and microbiome science.
