Anne Osbourn's research at the John Innes Centre centers on plant specialized metabolism, particularly triterpene biosynthesis and saponin chemistry, the subject of a highly cited review that has become a standard reference in the field. Her work on a specialized metabolic network that selectively modulates Arabidopsis root microbiota connects plant chemistry to microbial community assembly, while earlier studies on saponin-deficient plants and compromised disease resistance established saponins as central to plant defense against fungal attack. Related work examines how fungi counter these compounds, framing fungal resistance to plant antibiotics as a mechanism of pathogenesis. Beyond these lead-author contributions, Osbourn has contributed to broader efforts including comparative metatranscriptomics of the rhizosphere microbiome and speed breeding methods for crop and model plant research, reflecting engagement with plant-microbe ecology and applied breeding. Her collaboration with Cathie R. Martin on MYB transcription factors as regulators of phenylpropanoid metabolism further illustrates the metabolic-regulatory thread running through her work. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond her publications. Taken together, the listed outputs trace a consistent line of inquiry: from saponin biosynthesis and plant defense toward the metabolic networks that shape how plants interact with their microbial environment.
