Antoine Guisan's research centers on the theory and practice of species distribution modelling, particularly how habitat suitability models translate occurrence data into predictions useful for ecology and conservation. His most-cited first-author work, on predictive habitat distribution models in ecology (7352 citations), helped establish the conceptual foundations of the field, while a later synthesis argued for moving beyond simple habitat models toward fuller treatments of species distributions (6597 citations). Related methodological work on generalized linear and generalized additive models for species distributions (2354 citations) and on predicting species distributions for conservation decisions (2074 citations) reflects a sustained effort to make these tools both statistically rigorous and decision-relevant. Beyond that core, Guisan contributed to collaborative efforts such as novel methods for predicting species distributions from occurrence data (9082 citations) and work on how sample size affects species distribution model performance (2511 citations). His senior-authored ecospat R package supports spatial analyses of species niches and distributions, complementing his textbook treatment of habitat suitability and distribution models. Across these outputs, the through-line is a shift from describing where species occur to building transferable, testable predictions—an arc that connects his early conceptual papers, his methodological refinements, and his applied conservation work.
