Aron Marchler-Bauer's research centers on the Conserved Domain Database (CDD), a resource for functional annotation of proteins through conserved domains. His first-author work describing CDD's role in protein annotation (over 3,000 citations) and its 2014 update established the database as a reference for classifying protein families. Later work extended the resource toward subfamily domain architectures for functional classification, and as senior author he helped steer CDD/SPARCLE and the 2023 CDD release, maintaining the database's annotation coverage over time. Earlier, CD-Search enabled protein domain annotation on the fly, a tool-oriented counterpart to the curated database. Beyond the CDD line, Marchler-Bauer contributed as a middle author to the InterPro consortium's integrated protein family and domain classification, including the 2017 and 2022 releases, connecting his domain-focused work to broader community annotation efforts. Collaborators on these resources include Christopher J. Lanczycki and Daniel H. Haft. No software, datasets, grants, or patents beyond publications are indexed. Taken together, the works trace a sustained line of inquiry: building, curating, and extending protein domain resources from interactive search tools to large-scale functional classification.
