Benjamin S. Halpern's indexed work centers on mapping and quantifying cumulative human impacts on marine ecosystems, most prominently through a global map of human impact on the oceans that remains his most-cited contribution. Related first-author work tracks spatial and temporal change in cumulative human impacts, while a senior-author study examines interactive and cumulative effects of multiple human stressors in marine systems. Earlier first-author research on whether marine reserves work and how reserve size matters, alongside work on rapid and lasting effects of marine reserves, established a parallel line on marine protection. A global ocean health index extends this into assessing ecosystem benefits. Beyond lead-author papers, Halpern contributed as a middle author to Impacts of Biodiversity Loss on Ocean Ecosystem Services and to Marine Ecoregions of the World, a bioregionalization of coastal and shelf areas. Collaborators on this body of work include Fiorenza Micheli. No software, datasets, grants, or patents are indexed beyond these publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent arc: from reserve performance and trophic-cascade dynamics toward integrated, global-scale accounting of how human pressures accumulate across ocean ecosystems.
