Bing Ren's research centers on how the genome's regulatory landscape is organized and read. His most-cited senior-author work identified topological domains in mammalian genomes through chromatin interaction analysis, establishing a framework for how chromosomes fold into functional units. Earlier, he mapped distinct chromatin signatures of promoters and enhancers, showing that histone modification patterns can predict regulatory element identity, and extended this by demonstrating that histone modifications at human enhancers track cell-type-specific gene expression. Related studies mapped cis-regulatory sequences in the mouse genome and resolved the three-dimensional chromatin interactome in human cells. Beyond these, Ren contributed as a middle author to the integrative analysis of 111 reference human epigenomes, a large consortium resource, and to base-resolution maps of human DNA methylomes revealing widespread epigenomic differences. His earlier first-author work on genome-wide location analysis of DNA binding proteins helped pioneer the ChIP-based approach that underpins much of this line of inquiry. No software, datasets, or patents are indexed beyond his publications. Across these works, the through-line is a sustained effort to map and interpret the regulatory and architectural features of mammalian genomes.
