Brian D. Metzger's indexed work centers on the transient universe: the electromagnetic signatures of compact-object mergers, magnetar central engines, and fast radio bursts. His most-cited first-author study models electromagnetic counterparts powered by radioactive r-process decay in neutron-star mergers, a kilonova framework that underpins much of the field's follow-up strategy. He extended this line through reviews of kilonova emission, including work on the delay until black hole formation and its red-versus-blue imprint on merger light curves, and through the protomagnetar model for gamma-ray bursts, which links rapidly spinning magnetars to short bursts with extended emission. Middle-author contributions place him within the gravitational-wave follow-up community, including identifying heavy elements produced in a binary neutron-star merger and UV/optical/near-infrared light curves of GW170817 compared to kilonova models. Earlier work spans relativistic jetted outbursts from tidally disrupted stars and assisted inspirals of black holes in AGN discs. No software, datasets, or patents are indexed beyond these publications. Across these studies, the through-line is a sustained effort to connect compact-object physics to observable transients.
