Brian Vad Mathiesen's indexed work centers on the design and analysis of 100% renewable, smart energy systems, particularly the integration of fluctuating renewables across electricity, heating, cooling, gas, and transport. His highly cited 4th Generation District Heating (4GDH) framework, with over 2,200 citations, and later perspectives on fourth and fifth generation district heating define lower-temperature, integrated heating networks as a cornerstone of decarbonisation. Complementary work on Smart Energy Systems for coherent 100% renewable energy and transport solutions and smart energy systems concepts, alongside national analyses such as the Danish 2030 and 2050 pathways, argues that sector coupling is essential to cost-effective renewable transitions. Beyond these, his portfolio includes middle-author contributions to a review of computer tools for integrating renewable energy and to recent advances in solid oxide cell technology for electrolysis, reflecting engagement with both modelling infrastructure and power-to-X technologies. The EnergyPLAN tool, described in his indexed work on advanced analysis of smart energy systems, underpins much of this analytical approach. Taken together, the works trace a consistent line of inquiry: from national renewable energy scenarios toward integrated, cross-sector energy system modelling and district heating design.
