Carien L. Creutzberg's research centers on optimizing adjuvant treatment for endometrial cancer, particularly through the PORTEC trials. The PORTEC-2 trial established vaginal brachytherapy as a non-inferior alternative to pelvic external beam radiotherapy for high-intermediate-risk patients, with 1152 citations reflecting its practice-changing role, while companion quality-of-life analyses showed better bowel and bladder outcomes with brachytherapy. Earlier, PORTEC-1's fifteen-year outcomes defined long-term recurrence patterns after postoperative radiotherapy in stage I disease, and subsequent work used molecular profiling to refine prognosis and identify targetable pathways in high-risk tumors, laying groundwork for risk-adapted treatment. Beyond these trials, Creutzberg contributed to major consensus and classification efforts, including the ESMO-ESGO-ESTRO consensus guidelines on endometrial cancer diagnosis and treatment and the FIGO 2023 staging revision, helping standardize international practice. She also co-authored analyses within PORTEC-3 examining molecular classification and benefit from adjuvant therapy in high-risk disease, alongside Alexandra F. Leary. No software, datasets, or patents are indexed beyond her publications. Across this body of work, her contributions trace a consistent line: from randomized trials defining radiotherapy standards, through quality-of-life and long-term outcome reporting, to molecularly informed, internationally harmonized approaches to endometrial cancer care.
