Carlos Blanco's indexed work centers on the epidemiology and psychiatric comorbidity of substance use, anchored in large national surveys. His first-author study of mental health among college students versus non-college-attending peers remains his most-cited, while senior-author analyses of NESARC data traced the probability and predictors of transitioning from first use to dependence on nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine. Related work examines cannabis use as a risk factor for psychiatric disorders and sex and gender differences in pathological gambling and cannabis use disorders, alongside comorbidity between PTSD and alcohol dependence. Beyond these, Blanco contributed as a middle author to studies of psychiatric disorders in pregnant and postpartum women and of prescription opioid use, misuse, and use disorders among U.S. adults, the latter drawing on 2015 national survey data. His senior-authored reviews address the changing opioid crisis and the classification, epidemiology, and treatment of substance use disorders, complementing his first-author Lancet guidance on managing opioid use disorder. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications. The throughline is a survey-based, comorbidity-focused program spanning substance use, mood, anxiety, and gambling pathology.
