Christophe Béné's indexed work centers on the intersection of small-scale fisheries, poverty, and food security, with highly cited reviews questioning how fisheries and aquaculture actually contribute to poverty reduction and nutrition. His most-cited lead-author outputs include a review of resilience concepts in local food systems during COVID-19 and other shocks (1,010 citations) and an argument for putting fish back on the menu in feeding a projected 9 billion people (921 citations). A recurring thread is critical scrutiny of resilience as a development framework, notably in a reflection on resilience's potential and limits for vulnerability reduction programmes (827 citations). Beyond these, Béné contributed as a middle author to conceptualising COVID-19's impacts on household food security, extending his food-systems lens to pandemic-era shocks. Earlier collaborative work includes co-authorship with David C. Little on the potential role of small fish species in addressing micronutrient deficiencies in developing countries, where Béné served as senior author. Across these outputs, the through-line is a sustained effort to test whether fisheries, aquaculture, and resilience thinking genuinely serve poor and food-insecure populations, rather than assuming they do.
