Clifford P. Brangwynne studies how liquid phase condensation in cell physiology and disease organizes intracellular space, work that has become a foundational reference for the field. His early first-author study showing that germline P granules behave as liquid droplets that localize by controlled dissolution and condensation established the framework of biomolecular condensates, while later senior-author work on coexisting liquid phases underlying nucleolar subcompartments extended this to the nucleolus, describing it as a multiphase liquid condensate whose active liquid-like behavior determines its size and shape. Related studies trace how disordered proteins such as LAF-1 drive phase separation into droplets with tunable viscosity and dynamics, and how polymer physics and composition-dependent thermodynamics govern these intracellular transitions. Brangwynne's group has also developed tools to manipulate condensation directly, including light-activated optoDroplets for spatiotemporal control of intracellular phase transitions, and has examined how competing protein-RNA interaction networks control multiphase organization. Across these works, the through-line is a quantitative, physics-informed account of how cells use phase separation to compartmentalize biochemistry, from germline granules to the nucleolus.
