Colin James Barrow's indexed work spans two distinct research threads. His early career centered on the solution structures and aggregation behaviour of amyloid β-peptides in Alzheimer's disease, including studies of how pyroglutamyl-modified Aβ fragments form β-sheets more readily than full-length peptide and how histidine-13 drives zinc-induced aggregation. Later work shifted toward food and bioresource science, with highly cited contributions on enzyme-assisted extraction of bioactives from plants and on complex coacervation principles for microencapsulation, the latter underpinning applications such as tuna oil encapsulation in gelatin–sodium hexametaphosphate systems. Beyond these lead-author papers, Barrow contributed as a middle author to the discovery of agmatine as an endogenous clonidine-displacing substance in the brain and to work showing that amyloid-β binds copper and zinc to form membrane-penetrating, SOD-like structures. His portfolio also includes screening of Thraustochytrium strains for omega-3 production and studies of lentil protein isolate interfacial and emulsifying properties, alongside reviews on microalgal lipid and carotenoid production and microbial pigments. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications. The throughline is a career moving from molecular neuroscience to applied food biotechnology, consistently interrogating how biomolecular structure governs function.
