Daniel C. Alexander's indexed work centers on diffusion MRI methods for probing brain microstructure in vivo, most prominently the NODDI model for neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging, a last-author contribution with over 3,000 citations. Earlier first-author work established orientationally invariant indices of axon diameter and density from diffusion MRI and spatial transformations of diffusion tensor images, while his modeling studies characterized non-Gaussian apparent diffusion coefficient profiles in human brain data. A recurring thread is compartment modeling: a last-author taxonomy and comparison of compartment models of the white-matter diffusion signal, followed by multi-compartment microscopic diffusion imaging. Beyond these, he contributed to large-scale resources, including image processing and quality control for the first 10,000 UK Biobank brain imaging datasets, and co-developed AMICO, an optimization framework for accelerated microstructure imaging from diffusion MRI. His consortium-facing work extends to subtyping neurodegenerative disease trajectories through Subtype and Stage Inference, alongside Timothy Rittman and others. He also led or senior-authored Camino, an open-source diffusion-MRI reconstruction and processing package, and a practical review of imaging brain microstructure with diffusion MRI. Across these outputs, the arc runs from foundational diffusion-tensor methodology toward biologically interpretable, openly available microstructure models and their application at population scale.
