Research Statement

Daniel J. Cosgrove's research centers on how plant cell walls are assembled, loosened, and enlarged, with a long-standing emphasis on expansins and their role in wall extension—the subject of his most-cited lead-author reviews and the discovery papers describing two endogenous proteins that induce cell wall extension, work that underpins much of the field's understanding of wall loosening. His indexed output connects cell wall structure, mechanics, and the action of wall-modifying enzymes to plant growth, and extends to the molecular bases of extensible cell walls and cell enlargement, alongside comparative studies of primary and secondary wall biomechanics. Beyond these, his contributions include middle-author work using solid-state NMR to reveal lignin-polysaccharide interactions in secondary cell walls, reflecting engagement with consortium-scale structural biology. The through-line across these outputs is a sustained inquiry into the physical and molecular mechanisms by which walls remodel to permit growth.
