Daniel S. Margulies's indexed work centers on how large-scale functional gradients organize the human cortex. His most-cited first-author study situates the default-mode network along a principal gradient of macroscale cortical organization, linking intrinsic connectivity to cortical hierarchy, while a later senior-author review frames large-scale gradients in human cortical organization as an organizing principle (974 citations). Earlier work on shared intrinsic functional architecture of the precuneus in humans and monkeys established the cross-species connectivity grounding for this gradient account, and related studies map functional connectivity of the anterior cingulate cortex and relationships between functional connectivity and intracortical myelin. Beyond these, he contributed as a middle author to consortium work on discovery science of human brain function and to mapping of functional connectivity of the human striatum. He also helped develop NeuroVault.org, a repository for sharing unthresholded statistical brain maps, and co-authored work predicting brain-age from multimodal imaging data. Collaborators include R. Cameron Craddock. Across these outputs, the apparent arc runs from characterizing regional connectivity to treating cortical organization itself as a gradient.
