Research Statement

David J. Boud's most-cited work centers on how learners make sense of experience and assessment. His early reflection as a route from experience to learning (1985) remains his most-cited output, while later work reframed assessment around student feedback literacy and the uptake of feedback (2018) and sustainable assessment for a learning society (2000). A recurring thread is design: rethinking feedback models for learning (2012) and aligning assessment with long-term learning (2006) both argue that assessment should build capacities students carry forward, not merely certify them. Beyond these, Boud contributed as a middle author to developing evaluative judgement so students can judge the quality of their own work (2017), a theme that connects directly to his peer learning and assessment and self-assessment scholarship. No software, datasets, patents, or funded grants appear in the indexed record, so his publicly indexed outputs remain publication-based. Taken together, the works trace a sustained line of inquiry: from reflection and experience toward assessment designs that equip students to evaluate their own and others' learning.
