Building on their longstanding strengths in research and education, CAI advances interdisciplinary discovery spanning computing, data, information, and artificial intelligence and prepares students to shape how technology is designed, developed, and used for the public good. Supported by more than $400 million in philanthropic and institutional investment, CAI is expanding its faculty by 50 positions and significantly growing its research enterprise. Faculty joining CAI have the opportunity to contribute to established academic communities while helping shape a new college at a pivotal moment in its development. CAI is based in Morgridge Hall, a new, state-of-the-art facility designed to foster collaboration, learning, and discovery.

The Department of Computer Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison invites applications for tenure-track and tenured faculty positions at the assistant, associate, and full professor levels, beginning August 2027.

Applications and nominations at the associate and full professor levels are welcome at any point in the year. Senior candidates considering a move are encouraged to write to recruiting@cs.wisc.edu, in addition to applying online; we review senior applications as they arrive rather than on the standard cycle.

We welcome outstanding candidates in all areas of computer science. The department has particular interest this year in three areas:

• Artificial intelligence, broadly construed. This includes embodied AI and robotics, machine learning and the systems that support it, and AI developed for problems in science, engineering, medicine, education, and society.
• Security and privacy
• Quantum computing

Candidates whose work falls outside these three areas are encouraged to apply and will receive full consideration.

The successful candidate will advance the educational mission of the College of Computing and AI, that values, prioritizes, and actualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and undergraduate student mentoring. They will contribute to an environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

The Department of Computer Sciences is among the oldest and top-ranked computer science departments in the world, renowned for its research in computer architecture, database systems, distributed and high-throughput computing, programming languages, optimization, machine learning, security, and many other areas of computer science. The department has a strong track record of building large-scale computing infrastructure, including HTCondor and CloudLab, and of interdisciplinary collaborations, programs, and centers, including the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery. The department has also been the beneficiary of significant donations supporting its research and educational mission.

Located at the nexus of four beautiful lakes, Madison, the capital of the state of Wisconsin and home to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, consistently ranks among the top American cities for its quality of life. With the headquarters of medical software company Epic, Microsoft’s Jim Gray Systems Lab, Google, and several other technology companies in the area, as well as a strong startup ecosystem, Madison is also among the fastest growing technology hubs in the country.
