Bert Weckhuysen's research centers on heterogeneous catalysis and the conversion of complex feedstocks into fuels and chemicals. His highly cited work spans lignin valorization for renewable chemicals and its broader integration with bioengineering and biorefining, alongside catalytic dehydrogenation of light alkanes on metals and metal oxides. Related lines of inquiry address giving new life to plastic waste beyond mechanical recycling and the fundamentals of fluid catalytic cracking, while more recent contributions probe structure sensitivity in CO2 hydrogenation over nickel and the concept of the active site in heterogeneous catalysis. Beyond these themes, his portfolio includes middle-author contributions such as a comparative characterisation study of the structure and composition of technical lignins and work on recent trends and fundamental insights in the methanol-to-hydrocarbons process, reflecting sustained engagement with zeolite chemistry. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these works, the throughline is a spectroscopic, structure–activity approach to understanding catalysts and applying that understanding to sustainable chemical transformations.
