Arumugam Manthiram's indexed work centers on the chemistry and engineering of rechargeable batteries, particularly solid-state electrolytes for lithium battery chemistries and rechargeable lithium–sulfur systems, the latter reviewed in a 2014 account that remains among his most-cited outputs. His cathode-focused writing spans high-nickel layered oxide cathodes for automotive batteries and high-voltage positive electrode materials, while a 2020 reflection on lithium-ion cathode chemistry synthesizes decades of progress in the field. Across these works, the recurring concern is how electrode and electrolyte design choices govern energy density, cycling stability, and safety. Beyond lead-author reviews, he contributed as a middle author to pathways for practical high-energy, long-cycling lithium metal batteries, connecting his cathode expertise to cell-level design. No software, datasets, patents, or grants appear in the indexed record, so his publicly visible output remains publication-based. Read together, the works trace a consistent line: from sulfur and solid-state chemistries toward the layered oxide cathodes that dominate commercial lithium-ion cells, with collaborators such as Bryan D. McCloskey working in adjacent electrolyte and interfacial science.
