Research Statement

Chunyi Zhi's indexed work centers on boron nitride nanotubes and nanosheets, beginning with early studies of their synthesis and structure and extending to large-scale fabrication of boron nitride nanosheets for polymer composites with improved thermal and mechanical properties. A parallel line of inquiry addresses MXene chemistry, electrochemistry and energy storage applications, while his most-cited battery research examines dendrite formation in zinc-based batteries and nanoporous calcium carbonate coatings that enable uniform zinc stripping and plating for long-life aqueous rechargeable systems. Beyond these, his portfolio includes wearable solid-state zinc ion batteries based on hierarchical polymer electrolytes and photoluminescent MXene quantum dots for multicolor cellular imaging, alongside work on nanostructured polypyrrole as a flexible supercapacitor electrode. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these works, the through-line is a materials-chemistry approach to energy storage and nanomaterials—moving from fundamental nanomaterial synthesis toward practical, safer battery architectures.
