Axel Hoffmann's indexed work centers on spin Hall effects and spin pumping in metal bilayers, a line of inquiry he helped establish through first- and senior-author studies. His quantification of spin Hall angles from spin pumping (721 citations) and related detection of the inverse spin Hall effect in permalloy/normal-metal bilayers (543 citations) provided experimental and theoretical footing for measuring spin-to-charge conversion. A broader survey of spin Hall effects in metals (1088 citations) and a forward-looking assessment of spintronics frontiers (375 citations) frame the field's open problems, while later work extends toward antiferromagnetic spintronics and skyrmions in magnetic multilayers. Beyond those lead-author threads, Hoffmann contributed as a middle author to the direct observation of the skyrmion Hall effect and to interface-induced phenomena in magnetism, both widely cited community references. His portfolio also includes spin-wave multiplexer demonstrations and spin–orbit torque roadmaps, alongside studies of damping in platinum-capped yttrium iron garnet films and giant magnetoresistance in ferromagnet/superconductor superlattices. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications. The through-line is a sustained effort to measure, model, and engineer spin transport across material interfaces.
