Alexander Keesling’s indexed work centers on programmable quantum simulators and computation using neutral-atom arrays. As first author, he demonstrated the quantum Kibble–Zurek mechanism and critical dynamics on a Rydberg simulator (2019, Nature, 549 citations), probing how isolated quantum systems cross phase transitions. As last/senior author, he introduced Aquila, QuEra’s 256-qubit neutral-atom quantum computer (2023, arXiv), a cloud-accessible platform for programmable quantum simulation. Earlier lead-author work on probing quantum critical dynamics (2018) and quantum simulation with Rydberg atom arrays (2020) further established his focus on scaling neutral-atom platforms for many-body physics. Keesling contributed as a middle author to several high-impact collaborative works, including the landmark probing of many-body dynamics on a 51-atom quantum simulator (2017, Nature, 2,526 citations) and the atom-by-atom assembly of defect-free one-dimensional cold atom arrays (2016, Science, 882 citations). He also participated in demonstrations of Schrödinger cat states in Rydberg arrays (2019, Science) and high-fidelity multiqubit gates with neutral atoms (2019, Physical Review Letters). Across these efforts, his work consistently advances programmable Rydberg atom arrays as a platform for exploring quantum many-body physics and building toward practical quantum computation.
