AI generated · 4d ago

Carol Sorich Dweck's indexed work centers on how people's beliefs about their own abilities shape motivation, achievement, and resilience. Her early theoretical contributions, including a social-cognitive approach to motivation and personality and motivational processes affecting learning, established implicit theories of intelligence as a framework for understanding why some learners persist while others withdraw. This line of inquiry extends into self-theories and their role in motivation, personality, and development, which consolidated the distinction between fixed and growth-oriented beliefs. Later work, such as a national experiment on where a growth mindset improves achievement, tested these ideas at scale in real educational settings. Her most representative contributions also include praise for intelligence undermining children's motivation and performance, which showed how seemingly positive feedback can foster fixed mindsets, and implicit theories of intelligence predicting achievement across an adolescent transition, a longitudinal study linking beliefs to outcomes during a critical developmental period. Across these works, the throughline is a sustained effort to connect belief systems to measurable learning behavior. Angela Lee Duckworth appears among her indexed collaborators, reflecting shared interests in motivation and achievement. No software, datasets, grants, or patents are indexed beyond these publications.
