Research Statement

Berend-Jan Bosch's indexed work centers on coronavirus entry, fusion and tropism. Early first-author studies characterized the class I fusion core of the coronavirus spike protein and showed that heptad repeat-derived peptides can inhibit SARS-CoV infection, while later senior-author work mapped the MERS-CoV receptor-binding domain and identified sialic acid-binding function in the MERS-CoV spike glycoprotein, alongside cryo-electron tomography of the coronavirion. His most representative contributions include senior authorship on a human monoclonal antibody blocking SARS-CoV-2 infection, and middle-author roles in the identification of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 as the functional receptor for human coronavirus-EMC and in serological evidence of MERS-CoV neutralising antibodies in dromedary camels, the latter with Bart L. Haagmans. No software, datasets, patents or grants are indexed beyond these publications. Taken together, the record traces a sustained line of inquiry from spike structure and fusion mechanics toward receptor engagement, cross-species transmission and antibody-based intervention.
