Brent R. Stockwell's research centers on ferroptosis, the iron-dependent, nonapoptotic cell death program he helped define, and on the redox and lipid-peroxidation chemistry that governs it. His most-cited work characterizes iron-dependent nonapoptotic cell death and its regulation by GPX4, establishing the glutathione-dependent enzyme as the central brake on lethal lipid peroxidation. Related studies trace how polyunsaturated fatty acid peroxidation by lipoxygenases and cystine–glutamate exchange drive this death program, linking metabolism, redox biology, and disease. Beyond those foundational papers, Stockwell contributed to consortium efforts including the 2018 Nomenclature Committee on Cell Death recommendations and guidelines for monitoring autophagy assays, and to work showing that Gpx4 inactivation triggers acute renal failure in mice, extending ferroptosis into physiology. His indexed record lists no software, datasets, patents, or grants beyond publications. Collectively, these outputs trace a line of inquiry from synthetic-lethal screening in oncogenic-RAS cells toward a mechanistic, disease-relevant account of lipid-peroxidation-driven cell death.
