Cerving soil erosion, digital soil mapping and geostatistical prediction, Cristiano Ballabio's indexed work centers on global soil erosion under land use and climate change, including projections to 2070 that have become a reference point in the field. Related studies quantify rainfall erosivity from high-temporal-resolution records and extend it into erosivity projections for 2050 and 2070, while his first-author mapping contributions apply Gaussian process regression to LUCAS topsoil chemical properties and support vector machines to landslide susceptibility in the Staffora River Basin. Beyond these lead-author lines, he contributed to consortium-scale assessments of the global impact of 21st-century land use change on soil erosion and to the revised assessment of soil loss by water erosion in Europe, both widely used references. His work with Christine Alewell on rainfall erosivity helped establish the European datasets underpinning later projections. No software, datasets, grants or patents are indexed beyond his publications. Taken together, the record traces a consistent arc: from regional geostatistical mapping methods toward continental and global erosion, erosivity and soil-property assessments serving European Commission policy needs.
