Bruce L. Levine's research centers on engineering T cells for cancer immunotherapy, with a long-running thread on CD28 costimulation for long-term T-cell expansion, established in early work showing that CD80/CD86 ligands drive autocrine CD4+ T-cell growth and that costimulated cells could expand in HIV-positive patients. His later focus list turns to translation: global manufacturing of CAR T cell therapy and the promise and challenges of cancer immunotherapy, alongside zinc finger nuclease disruption of CCR5 for clinical-scale gene modification. A 2024 first-author piece examines secondary malignancies following CAR-T therapy. Beyond these, Levine contributed as a middle author to landmark trials, including tisagenlecleucel in pediatric B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia and CD19 CAR T cells for sustained remissions in leukemia, the latter reflecting the broader Philadelphia program associated with Carl H. June. Related work spans CRISPR-engineered T cells in refractory cancer and determinants of response and resistance to CD19 CAR T therapy. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications. The arc runs from basic costimulation biology through gene-editing and manufacturing toward the clinical CAR-T era.
