Axel Kallies's research centres on the transcriptional control of T cell differentiation, with a particular focus on how Blimp-1 and IRF4 jointly direct effector regulatory T cell fate and, separately, how IRF4, BATF and IL-33 sustain adipose tissue-resident regulatory T cells. His earlier first-author work established Blimp-1 as a quantitative determinant of plasma cell ontogeny and showed that the same repressor is required for effector CD8+ T cell differentiation and memory responses. A parallel line examines exhaustion: IRF4-driven CD8+ T cell exhaustion during chronic infection, and later MYB as an orchestrator of exhaustion and checkpoint-inhibition response, frame his interest in precursor exhausted T cells as immunotherapy targets. Beyond these lead-author studies, Kallies contributed as a middle author to defining the concept of T cell exhaustion and to work on Hobit- and Blimp1-dependent tissue-residency programs in lymphocytes, alongside Carl H. June. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent arc: from Blimp-1's role in antibody-secreting and effector T cells, through IRF4-centred control of regulatory and exhausted states, toward the transcriptional logic of precursor exhausted T cells.
