C. Michael Hall's indexed work centers on tourism's entanglement with global crises and environmental change, most visibly in his senior-authored assessment of COVID-19's rapid disruption of tourism and global change, which remains his most-cited output at over 4,700 citations, and in his first-authored argument that pandemic-driven transformations demand caution about what tourism wishes for. A parallel strand examines tourism's resource base, including ocean and coastal tourism as a contested final frontier and, with Ayyoob Sharifi, sustainable tourism indicators aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals. Earlier conceptual work on dissonant heritage and the management of the past in conflict established his long-standing interest in how places and their histories are contested. Beyond these, Hall contributed to tourism's water supply, demand and security and to consumer behaviour and demand response to climate change, both middle-author collaborations extending his environmental focus. His portfolio also includes foundational texts on tourism planning policy and processes and on tourism and migration as linked production–consumption relationships, alongside work on food tourism development and markets. No software, datasets, patents or grants are indexed beyond these publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent inquiry into how tourism is governed, resourced and reshaped by environmental and social pressures.
