Ahmed A. Zayed’s indexed work centers on characterizing the diversity and evolutionary origins of RNA viruses in marine environments. His first-authored 2022 *Science* paper (263 citations) revealed cryptic and abundant marine viruses at the evolutionary roots of Earth’s RNA virome, a finding that reshaped understanding of viral deep time. He also developed efam, an expanded HMM profile database of viral protein families (2021, *Bioinformatics*), which provides a metaproteome-supported resource for annotating viral sequences. Earlier work includes a study on **highly levofloxacin-resistant *E. coli* “supermutators”** (2015, *Emerging Microbes & Infections*), contributing a rapid detection protocol for mutation sites. Zayed contributed as a middle author to several high-impact consortia papers, including VirSorter2 (2021, *Microbiome*, 1,371 citations), an expert-guided tool for detecting diverse DNA and RNA viruses, and DRAM for distilling microbial metabolism (2020, *Nucleic Acids Research*, 1,213 citations), which automates microbiome function curation. He also participated in the Marine DNA Viral Macro- and Microdiversity from Pole to Pole study (2019, *Cell*, 913 citations). Across these works, his research consistently bridges computational tool development with large-scale viral ecology, from the human gut to the global ocean.
