Clotilde Théry's research centers on the biology of extracellular vesicles, particularly how exosomes are made, secreted, and taken up by recipient cells. Her early synthesis of exosome composition, biogenesis and function helped define the field, while later work on membrane vesicles as conveyors of immune responses connected vesicle biology to immunology. Her most-cited contribution, the MISEV2018 position statement on minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles, established community reporting standards, and her senior-authored work on Rab27a and Rab27b control of exosome secretion identified molecular machinery governing vesicle release. Beyond these, she contributed to MISEV2023, extending minimal information standards toward advanced approaches for vesicle characterization. Her senior-authored study using proteomic comparison to define markers of extracellular vesicle subtypes remains a widely used reference for distinguishing vesicle populations, and her work on specificities of exosome secretion and uptake in cell-to-cell communication clarified how vesicles signal between cells. Collaborations with Bernd Giebel and Andrew Francis Hill reflect this community-building thread. Across these outputs, her trajectory moves from describing vesicle fundamentals to setting shared standards and dissecting secretion mechanisms.
