Benjamin E. Deverman's research centers on engineering adeno-associated virus vectors that cross the blood–brain barrier, work anchored by Cre-dependent selection of AAV variants for widespread gene transfer to the adult brain, a foundational 2016 study with over a thousand citations. His later senior-author work identifies LY6A as a cellular receptor for AAV-PHP.B capsids and describes an AAV capsid reprogrammed to bind human transferrin receptor for brain-wide delivery, alongside a high-efficiency AAV for endothelial cell transduction across the central nervous system. Earlier work on cytokines and central nervous system development and on leukemia inhibitory factor's effects on oligodendrocyte progenitor proliferation and remyelination reflects a continuing interest in glial and developmental neurobiology. Beyond these, Deverman contributed to engineered AAVs for noninvasive gene delivery to the central and peripheral nervous systems and to single-cell phenotyping within transparent intact tissue through whole-body clearing. His review on gene therapy for neurological disorders and the COVID-19 CG platform for SARS-CoV-2 mutation and lineage tracking show a willingness to synthesize and build tools beyond the lab bench. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these outputs, the through-line is vector engineering paired with careful neurobiological application, including collaborations with Beth A. Stevens.
