Beth A. Stevens's indexed work centers on how microglia eliminate synapses through the classical complement cascade, a line of inquiry she helped establish as first author of the 2007 Cell study and later extended as senior author of the 2012 Neuron paper on activity- and complement-dependent sculpting of postnatal neural circuits (over 4,000 citations). She carried this mechanism into disease, showing in Science that complement and microglia mediate early synapse loss in Alzheimer mouse models, and used single-cell RNA sequencing of microglia across the mouse lifespan and after injury to map their complex cell-state changes. Beyond these lead-author works, she contributed as a middle author to the identification of neurotoxic reactive astrocytes induced by activated microglia and to the link between complement component 4 variation and schizophrenia risk, both in Nature, connecting glial biology to psychiatric and neurodegenerative disease. Her review outputs, including the "quad-partite" synapse concept, frame microglia-synapse interactions as a distinct signaling compartment. No software, datasets, or patents are indexed beyond her publications. Across these works, the throughline is complement-dependent synaptic pruning—from developmental wiring to Alzheimer's and schizophrenia—advanced alongside collaborators such as Ben A. Barres and Christopher K. Glass.
