Boris I. Yakobson's indexed work centers on the mechanics and electronic structure of low-dimensional carbon and boron materials. His highly cited first-author study of nanomechanical instabilities in carbon nanotubes beyond linear response helped establish the tube's nonlinear elastic behavior, while later senior-author work used ab initio computations to characterize the elasticity of C₂F, BN, and carbon nanoshells. Related predictions include polymorphism in two-dimensional boron and, subsequently, the possibility that such boron sheets could superconduct, alongside quasiparticle calculations of strain-tuned band structures and optical properties in monolayer MoS₂ and WS₂. Among broader collaborations, contributions to laser-induced porous graphene films from commercial polymers and to atomic hexagonal boron nitride layer growth reflect a parallel interest in synthesis and scalable fabrication, alongside consortium work such as the library of atomically thin metal chalcogenides. No software, datasets, grants, or patents are indexed beyond these publications. Taken together, the cited outputs trace a consistent line from carbon nanotube and fullerene mechanics toward predictive modeling of two-dimensional materials, including collaborations with Mauricio Terrones and Alex K. Zettl.
