Carlos Silvestre Frenk's research centres on how cosmic structure grows through gravitational instability, with galaxies and clusters forming inside collapsing dark-matter haloes. His early first-author work on the formation of dark halos in a cold-dark-matter universe helped establish the hierarchical picture, while later senior-author studies modelled galaxy formation through hierarchical clustering and, in a highly cited 2002 treatment, hierarchical galaxy formation more broadly. A parallel thread used cluster evolution as a diagnostic for the cosmological density parameter and examined the baryon content of galaxy clusters, work that posed an early challenge to then-standard cosmological assumptions. Beyond these, Frenk contributed as a middle author to landmark simulation and survey efforts, including the EAGLE project's simulations of galaxy evolution and assembly and the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey's power-spectrum analysis and cosmological implications. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent arc: from foundational N-body and halo-formation methods, through cluster-based cosmological tests, to participation in large collaborative simulations and redshift surveys that refined the standard model of structure formation.
