Research Statement

AI generated · 3d ago

Daniel J. Scott's indexed work centers on the intersection of tourism and climate change, with a recurring emphasis on adaptation and resource security. His most-cited senior-author review examines international tourism's water supply, demand, and security, while first-author studies assess global tourism vulnerability to climate change and the feasibility of the sector's aspirational greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. Earlier work on snowmaking as a technical adaptation in the southern Ontario ski industry established a methodological thread—quantifying climatic resources and industry response—that runs through much of his later research. Beyond these, Scott contributed as a middle author to rapid assessments of COVID-19's impact on tourism and global change, and to work on pandemic-driven transformations in tourism. He also co-authored a critical review of climate change risk for ski tourism and an earlier examination of consumer behaviour and demand response of tourists to climate change. No software, datasets, grants, or patents are indexed beyond his publications. Across these outputs, the through-line is a sustained effort to connect climate science with tourism practice, moving from local adaptation case studies toward global vulnerability and risk frameworks, often alongside collaborators such as C. Michael Hall.
