Bing-Jie Ni's indexed work centers on the fate and control of pollutants in wastewater and sludge systems, with several highly cited lead-author reviews and studies. His most-cited output, on the detection, occurrence and removal of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants (over 2,000 citations), anchors a body of work examining how polyvinyl chloride microplastics leach bisphenol-A and suppress methane production during anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge. Related studies probe the mechanisms by which polyethylene microplastics disrupt anaerobic digestion, while his review on the roles of free ammonia in biological wastewater treatment connects nutrient removal to microbial inhibition. He also contributes to transition metal-based electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution and iridium-based nanomaterials for electrochemical water splitting. Beyond these, earlier and collaborative contributions include dissecting microbial community structure and methane-producing pathways in a full-scale anaerobic digester via metagenomic sequencing, where he appears as a middle author, and defect engineering of oxide perovskites for catalysis and energy storage. His line of inquiry moves from granular activated sludge for low-strength municipal wastewater through heavy-metal adsorption onto sludge-derived biochar, and more recently to the accelerated spread of antibiotic resistance genes under non-antibiotic conditions. No software, datasets, grants, or patents beyond publications are indexed, so the public record rests on this sustained arc connecting wastewater treatment, anaerobic digestion, and materials for energy.
