Andrew Gonzalez's most-cited work centers on the metacommunity framework for multi-scale community ecology, a synthesis that helped formalize how dispersal and environmental heterogeneity shape diversity patterns. Related work frames biodiversity as spatial insurance in heterogeneous landscapes, asking how dispersal among habitat patches stabilizes ecosystem function, and examines the functional role of producer diversity in ecosystems. A parallel thread addresses evolutionary rescue as a means of preventing extinction under environmental change, including metapopulation models of adaptation under deterioration. Beyond these, Gonzalez contributed as a middle author to a global synthesis identifying biodiversity loss as a driver of ecosystem change and to the geography of biodiversity change in marine and terrestrial assemblages, both large collaborative assessments. Collaborations with Andrew P. Hendry and David A. Wardle connect to this evolutionary and functional-diversity work. No software, datasets, or patents are indexed beyond publications. The through-line is scale: from microecosystem metapopulation dynamics to global syntheses, the work links theoretical models of persistence and diversity to landscape-level conservation.
