Cory R. Dean's indexed work centers on the physics of two-dimensional materials, particularly how encapsulation in boron nitride substrates enables the high-mobility graphene devices underpinning much of his later research. That 2010 first-author study anchors a program extending to one-dimensional electrical contact to a two-dimensional material, and to Hofstadter's butterfly and the fractal quantum Hall effect in moiré superlattices, where graphene aligned with boron nitride revealed fractal quantum spectra. Later senior-author work turned toward tunable moiré systems, including correlated electronic phases in twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides and twistable electronics with dynamically rotatable heterostructures. Beyond these lead-author contributions, Dean contributed as a middle author to tuning superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene and to maximized electron interactions at the magic angle in twisted bilayer graphene, both of which helped establish moiré flat bands as a platform for correlated phenomena. His body of work traces a consistent line: developing the material and device control needed to expose new electronic phases in van der Waals heterostructures.
