Research Statement

Ben A. Barres's most-cited work centers on how reactive astrocytes are induced by activated microglia, a 2017 Nature study that remains his most-cited indexed output. Earlier, his laboratory showed that the classical complement cascade mediates CNS synapse elimination, and that thrombospondins are astrocyte-secreted proteins promoting CNS synaptogenesis—establishing astrocytes as active participants in circuit formation rather than passive support cells. A parallel strand addressed glial diversity directly, including a transcriptome database for astrocytes, neurons, and oligodendrocytes and genomic profiling of reactive astrogliosis. Beyond these lead-author papers, he contributed to consortium work mapping an RNA-sequencing transcriptome and splicing database of cortical glia, neurons, and vascular cells, and to studies of complement- and microglia-dependent synapse loss in Alzheimer models, where Beth Stevens was a collaborator. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications. Taken together, the arc runs from synapse formation and elimination through glial transcriptomic classification to reactive astrocyte states in disease.
