Research Statement

AI generated · 18h ago

Dave Goulson's research at the University of Sussex centers on the causes and consequences of insect decline, particularly in bumblebees. His most-cited lead-author work attributes bee declines to combined stress from parasites, pesticides, and lack of flowers, framing the problem as cumulative rather than single-cause, while a widely cited review examines the environmental risks posed by neonicotinoid insecticides. As senior author, he helped show that neonicotinoid exposure reduces bumble bee colony growth and queen production, and he has also traced chronic neonicotinoid exposure through residues in wildflowers. Beyond these, Goulson contributed as a middle author to the 27-year record of flying insect biomass loss in protected areas, one of the field's most-cited datasets, and to consortium reviews of neonicotinoid and fipronil environmental fate and non-target effects, work involving Christy A. Morrissey. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent line: documenting pollinator decline, identifying pesticide and landscape drivers, and arguing for conservation action.
