Ángel Rubio's indexed work centers on the electronic and structural properties of low-dimensional materials, approached through first-principles and many-body methods. His highly cited review of electronic excitations via density-functional versus many-body Green's-function approaches (4157 citations) frames a career-long concern with how quasiparticle and excitonic physics are captured theoretically, while his early first-author work on graphitic boron nitride nanotubes helped establish the field of non-carbon nanotubes. Related studies of elastic properties in composite carbon and boron-carbon-nitrogen nanotubes extend this structural thread, and later work applies similar machinery to moiré heterostructures as condensed-matter quantum simulators. Beyond these, Rubio contributed as a middle author to twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides and magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, connecting his methodology to correlated-electron experiments; Cory R. Dean appears among his indexed collaborators. His senior-author development of the octopus code for time-dependent density functional theory and his textbook treatment of time-dependent density functional theory fundamentals show a parallel commitment to building shared computational infrastructure. No software, datasets, patents, or grants beyond publications are indexed. Taken together, the works trace a consistent arc from nanotube structure through excited-state theory to engineered quantum materials.
