Charles D. Koven's indexed work centers on how soil carbon, nutrients, and vegetation dynamics shape the terrestrial response to climate change, particularly in cold regions. His most-cited first-author study, on permafrost carbon-climate feedbacks accelerating global warming, quantified how thawing soils release carbon that amplifies warming, while related work examined the sensitivity of that feedback to deep soil carbon decomposability rather than nitrogen dynamics. A parallel thread, including a widely cited senior-author piece on the future of land surface models and representing complex terrestrial systems, interrogates how well Earth system models capture these processes, with David M. Lawrence among his frequent collaborators. Beyond that core, Koven contributed as a middle author to syntheses such as the permafrost carbon feedback in climate change and circumpolar permafrost carbon stock estimates with quantified uncertainty, both of which consolidated community-scale understanding of high-latitude carbon. His senior-author work on multi-scale predictions of conifer mortality under chronic warming and on soil nutrient competition among plants, microbes, and mineral surfaces extends this into vegetation and biogeochemical modeling. No software, datasets, grants, or patents are indexed beyond these publications, so the through-line is a sustained effort to make land-surface and permafrost carbon dynamics more physically credible in global models.
