Christine A. Iacobuzio–Donahue's research centers on the genetic evolution of pancreatic cancer, particularly how metastatic spread arises late in tumor development rather than through early dissemination, as argued in her highly cited 2010 Nature study. Her work on DPC4/SMAD4 status as a predictor of treatment failure patterns linked molecular profiling to clinical outcomes in pancreatic cancer patients. She has also examined the genetic relationship between small cell and large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas of the pancreas, showing these tumor types are genetically similar yet distinct from well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors. Beyond these focus areas, she contributed to landmark consortium efforts including the core signaling pathway analysis of human pancreatic cancers and molecular subtyping of pancreatic cancer, both of which helped define the genomic landscape of the disease. Her earlier work on global gene expression profiling to identify novel pancreatic tumor markers reflects a sustained commitment to translating genomic discovery into clinically useful tools. Collaborations with David Arthur Tuveson and Michael F. Berger have further connected her evolutionary and genomic analyses to organoid models and clinical sequencing efforts. Across these works, her contributions trace a consistent arc: from early expression-based marker discovery to large-scale genomic characterization and evolutionary modeling of pancreatic cancer progression.
